Randy Shilts kind of points the finger at everyone, including the Gay community that he was a part of, and I feel that is what really made the book as great as it is.He didn't overlook the blame here and there to focus on one or two agents. He let it all out and because of that we got to see the many little things that all came together to give us the AIDS Epidemic. It's seems to be worth more because of that.It's not heavy handed. Instead he sets out all the pieces and lets us view it as a whole, without supplementing the blame to only the popular places and institutions.It's the best thing to read if you want all the social and governmental and medical reasons of this plague. Perhaps I thought is was a book about the Titanic and paid no attention when it first came out. This is one of the most important books I have read in years, and it will be truly impossible to adequately review it. Here is my poor effort.I was daunted for a few minutes when I saw the print was relatively small, and it was six hundred pages long. So the first thing to say was that every page held my attention. This is the history of the AIDS epidemic that killed thousands. It is almost a day to day history - or at least a month by month history.At first it manifested itself as odd infections in people who seemed to have lost their natural ability to fight germs. Since each infection or cancer seemed different, a common cause was not immediately obvious. But some doctors began to recognize it as a transmissible disease. As it turned out , it was a super-venereal disease. Because in the US it first turned up in homosexuals, basic prejudice kept research money away while there was still time to stop it.The blame for the fact that thousands died is so widespread that it is hard to begin - which is the best reason for this being a chronological book that follows individuals and movements. The most egregious were the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes for Health, and The National Cancer Institute who, even when granted money by Congress didn't use it. The Reagan Administration which cared more about lowering taxes and starving essential government services was as egregious a villain as any fiction writer could invent.The gay community itself was so paranoid it resisted all efforts to get control of the spread. I wondered about that paranoia. There were those who thought they might be sent to concentration camps. But I have realized that gays, Jews, and Gypsies, among others had been sent to camps in Germany and Japanese had been sent to camps in the US. That kind of paranoia suddenly made sense.Turf wars among agencies made for another road block. And, believe it or not, the US claimed to have discovered the virus that caused it when, apparently, it was the French. About as petty a thing any government official could do.The attitude among the blood banks was that they were a business, and testing the blood supply would affect their bottom line. Their attitude and testimony exactly paralleled those of the tobacco industry when cigarettes were deemed a health problem. Thousand died from tainted blood.Read the book. Ponder the real reason for good government. Think about where our taxes should be going.
